Analysts, who excluded investment and derivative gains or losses from their estimates, expected $1,360.44 profit per share on average, according to Thomson Reuters. Two analysts submitted revenue estimates that averaged $30.79 billion.

“We are hopeful that recent economic improvements will continue over the remainder of 2010 and beyond,” Berkshire said in its report.

Berkshire reported $1.97 billion net income, or $1,195 per Class A share. That’s down from $3.3 billion, or $2,D&G,123 per share, a year ago. Its revenue grew 7 percent to $31.7 billion.

OMAHA, Neb. – Warren Buffett’s company reported a 40 percent drop in second-quarter profit Friday because the improvement at Berkshire Hathaway Inc.’s operating companies couldn’t overcome $1.4 billion in paper losses on derivative contracts.

Buffett has said operating earnings are a better measure of how the company is performing in any given period because those figures exclude derivatives and investment gains or losses. Berkshire said its operating earnings soared 73 percent to $3.1 billion, or $1,866 per share, in the quarter, up from $1.8 billion, or $1,147 per share, last year.

Berkshire executives typically do not comment on quarterly earnings reports, and they did not respond to an interview request on Friday.

Most of Berkshire’s derivatives don’t require the company to post collateral, but at the end of June, Berkshire had posted $173 million collateral on its derivatives. That’s up from $28 million at the end of the first quarter.

But Berkshire finished the quarter with $28 billion cash, so it has the resources needed for collateral.

Berkshire’s strong performances from its railroad, insurance and manufacturing businesses was overshadowed by the plummeting value of the Omaha company’s derivatives — many of which are tied to the value of four major stock markets.

The freight railroad’s profitable quarter was part of a significant improvement in Berkshire’s manufacturing, retail and service businesses, which generated $671 million net income in the quarter, up from $239 million a year ago.

Fractional private jet leasing firm NetJets rebounded from a $348.5 million pretax loss a year ago to produce a $114.5 million pretax profit in this year’s second quarter.

And Berkshire also said it saw significant improvement at its Forest River RVs business, Iscar tool makers,Smet, Fruit of the Loom clothing and Johns Mansville, which makes insulation and roofing products.

Berkshire owns clothing, insurance, furniture, utility, jewelry and corporate jet companies. Berkshire also has big investments in companies including Coca-Cola Co. and Wells Fargo & Co.

Last year’s second-quarter profit was inflated because the value of Berkshire’s derivative contracts tied to equity indexes soared as the stock market improved in 2009. Berkshire recorded a mostly unrealized $1.5 billion gain on its derivatives in last year’s second quarter.

For instance, a $1.01 billion derivative loss contributed to a 77 percent drop in net income during 2008′s third quarter. Unrealized derivative losses of $986 million also contributed to a $1.5 billion loss in the first quarter of 2009.

Berkshire’s report does detail several bright spots at several of the company’s roughly 80 subsidiaries. Berkshire officials said the improvement at the company’s subsidiaries shows the economy has been stabilizing in the first half of 2010.

The true value of the derivatives won’t be clear for at least several years because they don’t mature until an average of 11 years from now, but Berkshire is required to estimate their value every time the company reports earnings. Buffett has told investors he believes the contracts will ultimately be profitable because the premiums are being invested.

Berkshire’s insurance unit contributed $462 million in underwriting profit, up from $66 million last year.

“To me, the overall picture is strong,” said Andy Kilpatrick, the stockbroker-author of “Of Permanent Value, the Story of Warren Buffett.” “I do think the derivatives mask the underlying thing a lot.”

Buffett warned after he first wrote most of the derivatives contracts in 2007 that their value would vary widely quarter to quarter, and his prediction has held true.

Paul Dergarabedian, head of tracking firm Hollywood.com Box Office, said earlier this week that "Eclipse," which mainly appeals to young women and girls, could earn $190 million from Wednesday through Sunday.

Box office figures released on Thursday show that the $68.5 million "Eclipse" earned in 4,416 U.S. and Canadian theaters beat the record set last year by "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," when it opened on a Wednesday with $62 million.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" enjoyed a record-setting Wednesday opening by making $68.5 million in theaters, but it fell short of the first-day gross for the previous movie in the vampire romance franchise.

"Eclipse" tells of a romance between teen Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson),The North Face, and the werewolf Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) who is friends with Bella and tries to steal her heart away.

"Eclipse" fell short of that mark, which is largely to be expected because Friday is one of the busiest days of the week at movie theaters and Wednesday typically is not.

But 2009's "The Twilight Saga: New Moon,Prada," the second film in the vampire series from independent studio Summit Entertainment, earned a record single-day opening gross of $72.7 million when it debuted on a Friday.

Despite the huge miss,Roca Wear, Best Buy backed its outlook for the full year. Some analysts however remain skeptical.

CEO Dunn said while there may be no rapid huge paybacks, he expected a steady return from the new initiatives.

"I usually applaud companies for making revenue and margin-enhancing investments… The concern I have though is that the degree to which Best Buy expects what seems to be an immediate payoff from these investments," Nagel said.

"It is definitely a significant worry. When you think about pricing… there is Amazon and Wal-Mart and a number of other major retailers that are focused on this category and they predominantly compete on price," Edward Jones' Matt Arnold said.

Best Buy, which has benefited from being the only other reseller of certain Apple products, is in for more challenges from its rivals.

Wal-Mart on Tuesday confirmed it would sell the fourth-generation iPhone on launch day. The retailer, which prides itself on featuring "everyday low prices," declined to comment on how it will price the new iPhone.

In a separate statement, Best Buy announced a new program to allow gaming enthusiasts to exchange old games for Best Buy giftcards. The news weighed on shares of GameStop (GME.N).

Best Buy reiterated its forecast for fiscal 2011 earnings of $3.45 to $3.60 a share on revenue of $52 billion to $53 billion.

Best Buy shares closed down 6 percent at $38.58 Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange.

It expects a slower rate of expense growth in dollar terms in subsequent quarters, with costs for full fiscal year 2011 up 6 percent to 6.5 percent from a year ago, excluding restructuring charges from fiscal 2010.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Best Buy (BBY.N) reported lower-than-expected sales and profit, hurt by rising costs of expanding its business and weaker consumer demand, sending its shares down 6 percent.

"Consumer spending has been episodic and (it) appears that our customers are operating on cues from the broader environment," CEO Brian Dunn said on a conference call on Tuesday.

Net profit was $155 million, or 36 cents a share, for the three months ended May 29, compared with $153 million, or 36 cents a share, a year earlier.

The top U.S. electronics chain said shoppers proved more tentative in a seasonally weaker quarter for sales. That theme has played out for many retailers as unemployment remains high and Europe's economic troubles weigh on a global recovery.

Analysts also focused on a 12.3 percent rise in selling, general and administrative costs, adding pressure to margins as Best Buy continues to fight a fierce price war against larger retailers Wal-Mart Stores Inc (WMT.N) and Amazon.com (AMZN.O).

Analysts on average were expecting a profit of 50 cents a share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Oppenheimer's Brian Nagel, who termed the company's outlook as "aggressive," worried that Best Buy's expectations might be a stretch.

In the first quarter, Best Buy's net revenue rose about 6.9 percent to $10.79 billion, missing analysts' expectations of $10.93 billion. Sales at stores operating for at least 14 months increased 2.8 percent, boosted by sales of notebook computers, mobile phones and appliances.

"I am not pleased with our overspend in the first quarter," CEO Dunn said in an interview, adding: "That being said … Q1 is 10 percent of our year. This was a good place for us to make some investments to set us up for the balance of the year."

Best Buy posted a low single-digit decline in same-store sales of televisions during its fiscal first quarter as well as weak sales in its video gaming, music and movie categories.

Selling, general and administrative expenses rose to 23 percent of revenue in the quarter from 21.9 percent a year ago. The company said that increase was driven by new stores, higher investments to boost sales and foreign currency fluctuations.
