Billboard singles reviews Taylor Swift, Lin – Adi

ARTIST: USHER FEATURING PITBULL
After just three weeks, Usher has landed another top 10 and potential No. 1 hit with "DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love." The R&B star's recent chart-topper, "OMG," reminded everyone that he's no stranger to tempo, and here he looks to Max Martin and his frequent collaborator Shellback for some extra heat on the dance floor. Pitbull drops his usual party antics, lending an energizing verse and "Dale!" ad-libs. Though the lyrics are repetitive, they're an accurate reflection of the song's effect on the listener: "Hands up, and suddenly we all got our hands up/No control of my body." Usher's high register fits seamlessly with dance beats, and "DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love" should keep clubgoers moving for months to come.
SINGLE: STUCK LIKE GLUE (Mercury Nashville)
Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush of Sugarland are poised for a whopping pop crossover with "Stuck Like Glue," which has already achieved the chart milestone of highest Billboard Hot 100 debut (No. 20) for a country duo or group. Co-written with Better Than Ezra's Kevin Griffin and songwriter Shy Carter (Rob Thomas' "Someday"), the song features Bush's brother, Brandon, on accordion and creates a Southern comfort vibe with mass appeal. It also taps into the rising trend of reggae-pop — from Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours" to Train's "Hey, Soul Sister" and Travie McCoy's "Billionaire" — that offers a refreshing alternative to the dance-pop hits dominating the airwaves. The song's catchy lyrics should keep "pulling you right back in," and you'll probably tap along to its beat, too.
ARTIST: SUGARLAND
For the lead single to upcoming fourth album "A Thousand Suns,Adidas," Linkin Park offers a nearly six-minute anthem of aggression with two distinct parts. "The Catalyst" lets the band dip its toe into electronica in its first half, with rave-ready blips surrounding Chester Bennington's dystopian cries. At the three-minute mark, however, the track morphs into a slow, emotional dirge, with Bennington singing, "Lift me up, let me go," over a beat tailor-made for a stadium's worth of slow claps. "The Catalyst" recalls Muse's epic vocal chants as well as Green Day's political commentary, but Linkin Park creates an original,Seven, if a bit awkward, transition from twisty techno to fist-pumping rock. The band's interesting fusion of ideas — and the fact that "Catalyst" is its first No. 1 debut on Billboard's Rock Songs chart — proves that Linkin Park still has a few tricks up its sleeve.
NEW YORK (Billboard) – If the rest of Taylor Swift's highly anticipated new album is as strong as its finely crafted lead single, then it's a sure bet that her career juggernaut will continue.
SINGLE: THE CATALYST (Machine Shop Recordings/Warner Bros. Records)
SINGLE: DJ GOT US FALLIN' IN LOVE (LaFace/Jive Label Group)
ARTIST: LINKIN PARK
"Mine" possesses a vibrant energy that perfectly complements her impassioned vocals. As the artist matures personally and professionally, the song demonstrates that she's successfully making the transition from a teen ingenue writing about high school crushes to a young woman exploring the complexities of adult relationships. Swift is a master at creating memorable lines, and one of the standouts here is, "You made a rebel of a careless man's careful daughter." By no means is "Mine" so heavy that she'll lose any of her legion of young fans, yet there's lyrical substance wrapped in the buoyant melody that shows Swift has the goods to go the distance and continue to broaden her audience.

Cubs suspend Zambrano after altercation with – Ev
by admin on Jun.26, 2010, under Ed Hardy
Piniella said Zambrano was upset after some of his teammates didn’t try to make diving stops, even though the balls was hit hard.
Zambrano has faced disciplinary action for his antics before.
Last season he was barred for six games by Major League Baseball after an outburst during a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. And in 2007, he got into a fight with former teammate Michael Barrett in the dugout. The fight then resumed in the clubhouse. Both players were fined.
CHICAGO – Carlos Zambrano was suspended indefinitely by the Chicago Cubs for his tantrum and dugout altercation with teammate Derrek Lee after the first inning of a 6-0 loss to the White Sox on Friday.
Zambrano was seen screaming as he walked down the dugout steps past Lee after allowing four runs and stormed toward the other end. Lee appeared to yell something, and as Zambrano headed back toward him, Piniella, pitching coach Larry Rothschild and bench coach Alan Trammell stepped between them.
Manager Lou Piniella, who sent Zambrano home, called his behavior embarrassing. Lee declined comment.
Cubs catcher Geovany Soto then grabbed the pitcher from behind and pulled him away. Zambrano appeared to say something to Piniella on his way to the clubhouse after being lifted for Tom Gorzelanny.
Zambrano then struck out Mark Kotsay and retired A.J. Pierzynski on a grounder to first, taking the throw from Lee to end the inning.
Asked if there was any doubt in his mind that Zambrano would pitch again for the Cubs this year, Hendry said he “certainly wouldn’t rule it out” and added “the rules of the game usually don’t allow long,Evisu, long-term suspensions.”
Zambrano is in the middle of a $91.5 million, 5-year contract extension he signed in August 2007,MLB Jerseys, and Hendry said he doesn’t think his behavior could nullify the deal.
General manager Jim Hendry said Zambrano’s behavior was “not acceptable” and sounded as if he has lost patience with the volatile pitcher.
After Paul Konerko singled, Carlos Quentin hit a three-run homer to left-center to extend the lead to 4-0.
That includes a leadoff double by Juan Pierre down the right field line past Lee and another with one out by Alex Rios down the left field line past third baseman Aramis Ramirez to drive in the first run.
Paychecks shrink as percentage of U.S. income -

Meanwhile, the jobless recovery in the economy at large could well be in jeopardy — which could accelerate the vicious circle. Considering the volatility in Europe and the deflationary trend in the U.S., some economists predict a "double dip" recession that could Christian Dior drive down growth in the American economy, after it had increased over the past three quarters.
University of Michigan economist Donald Grimes told the paper that the trend away from private income isn’t sustainable: After all, the government needs revenue generated by income tax to fund programs like food stamps. Government subsidies are often not taxed at all, or at lower rates than private salaries, leaving the government with less revenue to cover the benefits that people rely on during an economic crisis.
A record-low 41.9 percent of Americans’ personal income came Christian Dior from paychecks from private businesses in the first quarter of 2010, a new study by USA Today finds. Meanwhile, government benefits such as food stamps and unemployment insurance rose to a record-high 17.9 percent of Americans’ income.
In 2007, before the recession, 44.6 percent of income came from private wages and 14.2 percent came from government benefits. Roughly 8 million Americans have lost their jobs in the recession, driving up government assistance. But even before the recession, paychecks were declining as a share of income as health and pension benefits took a greater Christian Dior share, USA Today’s Dennis Cauchon notes.

Runway fashion. Action sports. Strange bedfellows? Even in Gucci the age of Cynthia Rowley for Roxy, well, yes. But that doesn’t mean the twain shall never meet. Nike will announce today that it is debuting the first women’s collection from its 6.0 action sportswear line, and it’s clear from the fall pieces that the company’s had an eye on the world of style. Slouchy crewneck sweatshirts (sound familiar?); loose, color-blocked tanks; and functional, weather-Gucci proof parkas can stand up to the waves and the slopes—they were tested on surfer Monyca Bryne-Wickey and snowboarder Ellery Hollingsworth, who double as campaign girls—but don’t look like they’re fresh off the racks at Modell’s. Congress close to deal to pay for tax cuts -
by admin on May.17, 2010, under Ed Hardy
The tax breaks benefit a wide variety of individuals and Affliction businesses and total about $30 billion a year. They include a deduction for college tuition for couples making less than $160,000 a year, and a deduction for teachers who use their own money to buy school supplies.
Some companies are able to use subsidiaries to claim foreign tax credits on income that is never brought to the U.S., and is never subjected to U.S. taxes. The provision would require companies to return the income to the U.S., subjecting it to U.S. taxes, before awarding the foreign tax credits.
Investment managers typically get a fee to manage funds or assets. They also get a share of the profits earned for investors above a certain level.
The overall cost of the bill will likely top $100 billion, with the unemployment benefits and health insurance subsidies adding to the budget deficit.
House and Senate negotiators said this week they are close to a deal that would increase taxes on investment fund managers and some multinational companies. Also on the table: Requiring lawyers, doctors and other service providers to pay Medicare taxes on income they receive through their businesses.
The tax increase on multinational companies would raise an estimated $9.5 billion over the next decade by limiting the ability of some U.S.-based companies to use foreign tax credits to reduce their U.S. taxes. Generally, the United States taxes income earned by U.S.-based multinational corporations, even if the money is earned abroad.
Legislation combining the tax breaks with more aid for people who have been unemployed for long stretches is expected to come up for a vote in the House next week. The bill would extend unemployment benefits for up to 99 weeks in many states and subsidize health insurance premiums for laid-off workers through the end of the year.
"The retailers are working on very thin margins," said Van Martin, chairman and CEO of Tribble & Stephens, a Houston-based construction company that does work in 23 states. "We’re looking for people that want to build, and it’s still pretty slow."
The tax increases could raise more than $50 billion over the next decade, though lawmakers cautioned they are still working on the details.
Under current law, the profit-sharing fees, called carried interest, are taxed as capital gains, with a top rate of 15 percent. The bill would tax the fees as regular income, with a top tax rate of 35 percent, scheduled to rise to 39.6 percent in 2011.
The tax breaks would be retroactive to Jan. 1 but would again expire at the end of December. They include a property tax deduction for people who don’t itemize, lucrative credits that help businesses finance research and develop new products, and a sales tax deduction that mainly helps people in states without income taxes.
The change in how investment managers are taxed would raise about $20 billion over the next decade, with a short-phase in period. It would affect hedge fund and private equity managers, as well as many real estate investment partnerships
The National Venture Capital Association says the tax increase would reduce investment in startup companies. The group sent a letter opposing the tax to lawmakers this week, signed by more than 1,700 venture capitalists and entrepreneurs.
The Senate has rejected the tax increase on investment fund managers in the past, but Baucus said his colleagues are closer than ever to agreeing to it.
Details are still being worked out, but lawmakers Affliction also plan to expand a federal bond program that subsidizes local infrastructure projects, and to protect doctors from a scheduled 21 percent cut in Medicare payments.
Delays in extending the tax breaks have left thousands of businesses unable to plan for their tax liabilities. Delays in passing a long-term extension of emergency unemployment benefits has forced thousands of laid off workers to live month to month with no certainty of income. Unemployment benefits for many will start to run out June 2, unless Congress acts.
"People who invest their own money should be paying a capital gains (tax), those who manage other people’s money should be paying ordinary income Affliction taxes), like everybody else does," said Rep. Sander Levin, D-Mich., chairman of the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee.
WASHINGTON – Congress is finally getting around to extending more than 50 popular tax breaks that expired at the end of last year, including money savers Affliction for homeowners, businesses and shoppers in states with no income tax. Lawmakers want to raise taxes on investment fund managers to help cover the cost.
The income, however, is not taxed by the U.S. until it is brought to the U.S. To avoid double taxation, companies get tax credits for the amount of foreign taxes paid on the income.
There is a tax credit for community development agencies that invest in low-income neighborhoods, as well as a tax break for restaurant owners and retailers who remodel their stores or build new ones.
Congress routinely extends the tax breaks each year — the House and Senate have already passed competing versions for 2010. But lawmakers have been unable to agree on how to pay for them.
Senate leaders hope to hold a vote on final passage before Memorial Day, said Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., chairman of the tax-writing Senate Finance Committee.
For more children, dinner is coming from Uncle Sam
by admin on May.13, 2010, under Ed Hardy
"As the economy gets worse, we’re seeing more and more kids," said Beth Baldwin-Page, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club of Brattleboro.
"It helps out a lot," he said.
Programs in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Wisconsin, the District of Columbia and now in Vermont are eligible for reimbursement for suppers.
In East Prairie, Mo., kids who may have skipped the meal from time to time are coming every day, said Lester Gillespie, youth program director at the Susanna Wesley Family Learning Center, which serves 150 meals a day at two sites to kids age 5 to 18.
The number of Americans who live in food-insecure households — which at times don’t have enough nutritious food — rose from 36 million people in 2007 to 49 million in 2008, according to the most recent report from USDA’s Economic Research Service.
A lack of nutritious food, especially in the first three to Baby Phat five years, can have lasting effects on the health and development of children. Filling their stomachs with nutritional meals helps them learn and concentrate, officials have said.
"We see families getting evicted left and right. They don’t have a place to live, let alone cook food," Baldwin-Page said.
With more families losing jobs and homes, the need is growing, officials said.
Three days a week, the club offers dinners feeding 40 to 60 kids on a Thursday night to up to 100 on Friday.
Around the country, about 49,000 children benefit from the after-school meals each day. The program is expected to cost a total of $8 million from 2009 to 2013, the USDA said.
Delaware, where the supper program is one of the fastest-growing child nutrition programs in the state, has gone a step further, prohibiting the use of any grain product that contains more than 6 grams of sugar or any product where more than 35 percent of calories are derived from fat.
"What we’ve noticed is that when kids are eating nutritional meals, they tend not to get involved in negative activities such as doing graffiti or committing delinquent acts because when their stomach is full they make good decisions," said Gillespie.
Bernie Parent, 18, of Brattleboro has relied on the meals since he and his mother became homeless last year.
Now living on his own in an apartment, going to high school, and working at the Boys & Girls Club, he still relies on the three free dinners each week.
She moved on to her seconds, and the other kids at the evening care program in Brattleboro were also chomping down the dish made of spinach, peppers, carrots, tomato, fresh basil and cheese.
Among those, 16.7 million were children, up from 12.4 million in 2007.
"It’s popular. Unfortunately, it’s necessary," said Ricky Davidson, unit director.
BRATTLEBORO, Vt. – While the other preschoolers Baby Phat were warming up to the vegetable pesto lasagna, 3-year-old Avery Bennett dived in with no hesitation.
More low-income school kids could soon have access to free nutritious dinners like the lasagna that Avery loved. A U.S. Department of Agriculture program in Vermont, 12 other states and the District of Columbia provides reimbursements for the Baby Phat suppers, served at after-school programs for at-risk kids in communities where at least 50 percent of households fall below the poverty level.
Nearly one in four children in the U.S. are food insecure and about one in five live in poverty, according to a report from Feeding America, a network of 200 food banks around the country.
The Brattleboro Boys & Girls Club started offering dinners on its own two and a half years ago. When it learned the supper program was being expanded to Vermont, it applied for and just starting getting the federal reimbursement of $2.68 per meal.
"What it allows us to do is provide those kids with an extra nutritious meal before they go home because some kids go home to nothing," said Susan Eckes, director of child nutrition programs for the Food Bank of Northern Nevada in McCarran, Nev.
The USDA requires the sites to offer nutritionally balanced suppers with milk, a protein, fruit, vegetables and bread or a grain item.
"Can I have some more lasagna?" Bennett said from her booster seat. "I love it."
Fake Abercrombie Fitch Spitzer film recalls glory
by admin on Apr.27, 2010, under Ed Hardy
He resigned a little more than a year after becoming governor and kept a low profile until the U.S. Attorney’s office announced it would not seek charges.
"I hope I didn’t say that," Spitzer said on camera.
"It’s about our political bloodsport, it’s about the powerful people that Spitzer went up against and how they struck back. It’s about power. And it’s about the strange mixture of beast and ideals that we are as human beings.",Fake Abercrombie Fitch;
(Reporting by Christine Kearney, editing by Jackie Frank)
Gibney, who made the film with Peter Elkind, author of "Rough Justice: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer", said the film is about fallibility of human nature and the rough nature of politics.
"There is a second act for Eliot Spitzer. What form it will take remains to be seen," said Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney, who spent two years making the film after the Democrat resigned as governor.
Angelina’s identity is not revealed and an actress read her answer on camera.
"You cave to temptations in ways that seem easier and perhaps less damaging," he says. His wife, Silda Wall Spitzer, declined to be interviewed.
Spitzer, who has fueled speculation of a return with increased visibility in interviews and as a pundit, recently told Fortune magazine that he was "incredibly frustrated" at no longer being governor. "I’ve never said I would never consider running for office again," he added.
Among the Wall Street types interviewed was ex-New York Stock Exchange director Kenneth Langone, who said Spitzer was feared on Wall Street. "I like to think that I am not a vindictive person," he said, but continued, "I can’t forgive him."
She said there was a tacit agreement not to Ankh Royalty acknowledge his identity. "He knew I knew," she said. She also denied previous reports that he had worn black socks during sex.
The as-yet-untitled film details Spitzer’s days crossing Ankh Royalty companies including Merrill Lynch, AIG and The New York Stock Exchange as New York attorney general and trying to change dirty politics as governor in the state’s capital of Albany.
Spitzer’s alleged former favorite escort, "Angelina" — now a commodities trader –recalled meeting Spitzer outside New York in Puerto Rico, Washington and other places.
NEW YORK (Reuters) – Eliot Spitzer left a lot of Ankh Royalty enemies in his wake as the "The Sheriff of Wall Street" and some still have not forgiven the former state attorney general, who resigned in 2008 as governor of New York in a prostitution scandal.
Spitzer, once a rising star of the Democratic party, did not show up for the screening. In one of the four interviews for the film he discussed his prostitution scandal, in which he paid $100,000 for high-priced prostitutes.
Former Goldman Sachs chief executive John Whitehead recalled Spitzer’s aggressive manner and tactics. "He said, ‘I will destroy you.’"
These opponents, prostitutes and Spitzer himself, talk for the cameras in a new film, shown for the first time as work-in-progress at the Tribeca Film Festival on Saturday night.
